Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Mexico?

No, US passport holders do not need a visa to enter Mexico for tourism, business, or transit stays of up to 180 days. This is one of the most generous visa-free arrangements available to US citizens.

Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM)

The FMM is Mexico's tourist card — technically a migration form, not a visa:

  • Cost: Free if arriving by air (the fee is included in your airline ticket). Approximately $30 if entering by land.
  • Validity: Up to 180 days (the immigration officer determines the exact number of days — usually 180 for tourists)
  • Process: Filled out on the plane or at the border. Keep the stub — you must return it upon departure.

Important: The FMM is being gradually replaced by a digital system. Some airports no longer issue paper FMMs — your entry is recorded electronically. Verify your permitted stay date by checking the electronic entry record on the INM website.

Temporary Resident Visa

For stays exceeding 180 days, US citizens can apply for a Temporary Resident Visa:

  • Validity: 1-4 years
  • Income requirement: Monthly income of approximately $2,500-$4,100 USD or bank balance of $41,000-$164,000 USD (amounts adjusted annually)
  • Application: Must be initiated at a Mexican consulate in the US before traveling
  • Benefits: Ability to work (with work permit), open Mexican bank accounts, import household goods duty-free

Permanent Resident Visa

Available after 4 years of temporary residency or through family reunification. No income requirements for those who have completed the temporary residency period.

Entry Requirements

  • Valid US passport (no minimum validity requirement for US citizens entering Mexico, but airlines may require 6 months validity for return travel)
  • Completed FMM (or electronic entry record)
  • Proof of sufficient funds (rarely checked, but technically required)

Land Border Entry

US citizens entering Mexico by land within the free zone (20-30 km from the border) do not need an FMM. However, if traveling beyond the free zone, you must obtain an FMM at the immigration checkpoint. The free zone includes popular border destinations like Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, and Nuevo Laredo.

Important Safety Note

The US State Department maintains travel advisories for certain Mexican states. Check current advisories before travel. Most tourist destinations are under Level 1-2 advisories, but some states have Level 3-4 (Reconsider Travel / Do Not Travel) designations due to crime.
