Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Thailand?

US passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days for tourism purposes under the bilateral agreement. This is one of the most generous visa-free entries in Southeast Asia. The 60-day period can be extended once for an additional 30 days at a Thai Immigration Office for a fee of 1,900 THB (approximately $55).

Thailand Visa Options for Longer Stays

  • Tourist Visa (TR): 60-day single entry, extendable by 30 days. Available from Thai embassies. Cost: approximately $60.
  • Special Tourist Visa (STV): 90-day stay, extendable twice for 90 days each. Designed for long-stay tourists.
  • Retirement Visa (Non-O): For applicants 50+ with monthly income of 65,000 THB ($1,800) or bank deposit of 800,000 THB ($22,000). Initial 90-day entry, extendable annually.
  • Elite Visa: 5-20 year multi-entry visa with VIP immigration privileges. Cost ranges from 600,000 to 2,000,000 THB ($17,000-$56,000).
  • Business Visa (Non-B): For employment or business. Requires work permit for employment.

Entry Requirements

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond entry date
  • Proof of onward travel (return or connecting flight ticket)
  • Sufficient funds (10,000 THB per person / 20,000 THB per family for visa-exempt entry)
  • Completed arrival card (distributed on the plane or at immigration)

Customs and Currency

Travelers bringing more than 50,000 THB or equivalent in foreign currency must declare it upon arrival. There are restrictions on importing medications — particularly those containing pseudoephedrine or codeine — which require prior approval from the Thai Food and Drug Administration.

Thailand Digital Arrival Card

Thailand has implemented a digital arrival card system (Thailand Digital Arrival Card, TDAC) that replaces the paper TM6 card for most travelers. This can be completed online up to 72 hours before arrival. Some land border crossings still use paper cards.

Important Notes for US Travelers

Overstaying your visa in Thailand incurs a fine of 500 THB per day ($14), up to a maximum of 20,000 THB ($560). Overstays are taken seriously and can result in blacklisting from future entry. Always check your permitted stay date in your passport stamp.
