What Is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a mandatory electronic pre-travel clearance for visa-exempt travelers entering 30 European countries. It is not a visa — it is an automated system that screens travelers against security databases before they board flights to Europe. Regulation (EU) 2018/1240, adopted by the European Parliament on 12 September 2018, establishes the legal framework for this system.

Which Countries Require ETIAS?

ETIAS applies to all Schengen Area countries plus Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania. The full list includes: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Who Needs ETIAS?

Citizens of approximately 60 countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area must obtain ETIAS authorization. This includes passport holders from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Argentina. Nationals of these visa-exempt third countries are required to hold a valid ETIAS authorization prior to boarding any carrier bound for an ETIAS member state.

ETIAS Fees and Validity

The ETIAS application fee is €7 for applicants aged 18 to 70. Applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt from the fee. Once approved, an ETIAS authorization remains valid for three years or until the travel document expires — whichever occurs first. During the validity period, the holder may enter ETIAS countries multiple times for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

How to Apply for ETIAS

The application is submitted entirely through the official ETIAS portal or the ETIAS mobile app. Required data includes: full name, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, passport details, and answers to security screening questions regarding criminal history, travel to conflict zones, and prior immigration violations. Each application is checked against the Schengen Information System (SIS), the Visa Information System (VIS), the Entry/Exit System (EES), Europol data, and Interpol's Stolen and Lost Travel Documents (SLTD) database.

Regulation (EU) 2018/1240, Article 37: "Where there are reasonable doubts regarding the accuracy of the data provided by the applicant, the ETIAS National Unit of the Member State responsible shall manually process the application."

Key Requirements and Restrictions

ETIAS authorization constitutes pre-travel clearance only. Final admission is determined by border guards at the external Schengen border under Article 6 of the Schengen Borders Code (Regulation (EU) 2016/399). Travelers with criminal convictions under national law, prior immigration violations, or travel to conflict zones face additional scrutiny during the automated screening process. A passport with at least 3 months validity beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen Area is required.

How ETIAS Affects Passport Power Rankings

For passport holders from visa-exempt third countries, ETIAS does not alter the underlying visa-free status — it introduces a mandatory pre-screening layer. The passport retains its visa-free classification for Schengen travel under the EntryPolicies passport power index. ETIAS is classified as a secondary authorization alongside eTA and ESTA programs, which do not reduce the visa-free destination count in our methodology.
