ETIAS: What Changes in Late 2026

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected to become operational in late 2026. Here is what US travelers need to know:

  • What it is: An electronic pre-travel authorization, NOT a visa — similar to the US ESTA or Canadian eTA
  • Who needs it: All visa-exempt travelers to the Schengen Area, including US passport holders
  • Cost: €7 (free for under 18 and over 70)
  • Validity: 3 years or until passport expires
  • Processing: Most applications approved within minutes; some may take up to 30 days
  • Does NOT change the 90/180 rule: ETIAS adds a pre-authorization layer but does not extend your allowed stay
  • When to apply: Before booking flights or at least 72 hours before departure
  • Application: Online at the official ETIAS portal or mobile app — do NOT use third-party sites charging $50-100 for the same €7 application

Key Reminders for US Travelers

  • Passport validity: Many countries require 6 months validity beyond your date of entry. If your passport expires within 6 months, renew it before traveling.
  • Blank pages: South Africa requires 2 blank visa pages. Many other countries require at least 1. If your passport is nearly full, renew before long trips.
  • Return ticket: Some countries (Philippines, Costa Rica, Indonesia) require proof of onward travel. Airlines may deny boarding without it.
  • Travel advisories: Check the US Department of State travel advisories before visiting any destination. Some visa-free countries have Level 3 or 4 advisories (Reconsider Travel / Do Not Travel).
  • Registration: Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov for safety updates and emergency assistance.
