About the Schengen Area
The Schengen Area is a zone of 29 European countries that have abolished passports and all other types of border control at their mutual borders. Once you enter one Schengen country, you can travel freely throughout the entire zone without further border checks. 32 nationalities can enter visa-free for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). From 2026, visa-exempt travelers will need an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) authorization before entering.
Key Schengen Rules
90/180 Rule
You can stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire zone, not per country.
ETIAS Authorization
From 2026, visa-exempt travelers must obtain an ETIAS travel authorization online before entering the Schengen Area. It costs €7 and is valid for 3 years.
Travel Insurance
Travel medical insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 is mandatory for all Schengen visa applicants and strongly recommended for visa-free travelers.
